About ICO files

ICO is a container that holds the same icon at several resolutions — commonly 16, 32, 48, and 256 pixels — so the operating system or browser can pick whichever fits. It is still the format Windows uses for application icons and the one browsers historically expect at /favicon.ico. Converting an ICO to PNG extracts the largest image it contains.
