JPG is already a lossy format, so compressing it further means re-encoding at a lower quality setting. That works well: most photographs straight from a camera or phone carry far more data than they need for screen viewing, and dropping to around 75% quality typically halves the file with no difference you would notice. Use target size mode if you have a hard limit to meet, such as an upload form that rejects anything over 2 MB.
Worth knowing: Each re-encode discards a little more detail. Compress from the original file where you can, rather than compressing an already-compressed copy repeatedly.
Worth knowing: JPG has no transparency. If your image needs a transparent background, compress to WebP instead.

How much can I compress a JPG without it looking bad?

Can I compress a JPG to an exact file size?
Yes. Switch to target size mode and enter a figure in KB or MB. The tool encodes repeatedly at different quality levels to find the highest quality that still fits your budget, and tells you the quality it settled on.
Why did my file get bigger?
That happens when the original was already compressed harder than the quality setting you chose. Lower the quality, or keep the original — the tool tells you when the original was smaller.
