AVIF files saved from modern websites frequently refuse to open in desktop applications. Converting to PNG produces a lossless copy that every program understands, and preserves any transparency in the original. The resulting file will be substantially larger, since PNG cannot compress photographs anywhere near as efficiently as AVIF — choose JPG instead if size matters more than exactness.
Before you convert: PNG does not support animation. If your AVIF file is animated, only the first frame is converted.
Before you convert: PNG is lossless, so nothing further is discarded — but it also cannot recover detail the AVIF file already lost, and the result will be noticeably larger than the original.

About AVIF files
AVIF applies the AV1 video codec to still images and currently achieves the best compression of any widely-deployed format, often half the size of a JPG at comparable quality. It also handles transparency, animation, HDR, and wide colour gamut. The catch is reach: browser support is good, but support outside the browser is thin, which is exactly why people convert AVIF files back to JPG or PNG.
Where they come from: Images saved from modern, performance-focused websites.
Drawbacks of AVIF
- Very limited support in desktop and mobile applications
- Slow to encode compared with JPG or WebP
Why convert to PNG?
PNG was created in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF, and it became the standard for anything that needs a transparent background or pixel-perfect fidelity. Its compression is lossless, so a PNG is an exact reproduction of the original — no artefacts, no generational loss when re-saved. That precision is why it is the format of choice for logos, screenshots, icons, and UI assets.
- Full alpha transparency
- Lossless — no quality degradation, ever
- Sharp text, lines, and flat colour stay crisp
Support: Universal, including transparency.
Common questions
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using your own device’s processor. Your AVIF file is never transmitted, never stored, and never seen by us — you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it will still work.
Is there a file size or daily limit?
There is no daily limit and no account required. Because your device does the work rather than our server, we have no per-conversion cost to recover. The practical ceiling is your device's available memory — very large files on older phones may fail, in which case convert them in smaller batches.
Can I convert several AVIF files at once?
Yes. Select or drop as many AVIF files as you like and they are converted one after another, then offered as individual downloads or a single ZIP.
Why can I not open AVIF files in my photo editor?
AVIF is a web-first format. Browsers all support it, but a great deal of desktop software — including older versions of Photoshop and most default photo viewers — has never added support. PNG is understood everywhere.
