WebP is what most websites now serve, which means images saved from the web often will not open in older desktop software, office suites, or photo printers. JPG is the lowest common denominator that works everywhere. Expect the file to grow somewhat — WebP is the more efficient format — in exchange for opening on absolutely anything.

Before you convert: JPG cannot store transparency. Any transparent area in your WebP file will be filled with a solid background colour — white by default. If you need the transparency preserved, convert to PNG or WebP instead.

Before you convert: JPG does not support animation. If your WebP file is animated, only the first frame is converted.

Before you convert: Both formats are lossy, so the image is re-encoded once. The quality loss is minor at default settings, but avoid repeatedly converting the same file back and forth.

About WebP files

WebP was released by Google in 2010 to cut image weight on the web, and it does: it typically produces files 25–35% smaller than an equivalent-quality JPG. It supports both lossy and lossless modes, full transparency, and animation, making it the one format that covers everything JPG, PNG, and GIF do individually. Its weakness is not technical but social — plenty of desktop software still refuses to open it.

Why convert to JPG?

JPG (also written JPEG) has been the default photographic format since 1992 and remains the most universally supported image format in existence. It uses lossy compression tuned for photographs, discarding detail the human eye is least likely to notice. Every operating system, browser, printer, and photo kiosk on the market reads it without complaint.

Common questions

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using your own device’s processor. Your WebP file is never transmitted, never stored, and never seen by us — you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it will still work.

Is there a file size or daily limit?

There is no daily limit and no account required. Because your device does the work rather than our server, we have no per-conversion cost to recover. The practical ceiling is your device's available memory — very large files on older phones may fail, in which case convert them in smaller batches.

Can I convert several WebP files at once?

Yes. Select or drop as many WebP files as you like and they are converted one after another, then offered as individual downloads or a single ZIP.

Will I lose the transparent background?

Yes — JPG has no way to store transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with a solid colour. Convert to PNG or WebP if the transparent background matters.

Will the quality drop?

JPG is a lossy format, so some data is discarded. We default to a high quality setting where the difference is not visible on normal viewing, and you can raise or lower it before converting.

Why can I not open WebP files in my photo editor?

WebP is a web-first format. Browsers all support it, but a great deal of desktop software — including older versions of Photoshop and most default photo viewers — has never added support. JPG is understood everywhere.
